Bingo And Why The British Love The Game

/2008-07-21/

The British are very fond of their bingo. There were many dance halls in the United Kingdom that were basically vacant after the advent of television. In the 1960s when bingo became legal in the United Kingdom, many of these vacant dance halls were turned into bingo halls. These brick and mortar establishment were based on membership and provided the basis for the bingo industry in the United Kingdom since they were the only places that could offer cash prizes for bingo winners until last September 1 and the new regulations.

The popularity of bingo is in part due to the existence of the National Game. This is a situation where more than five hundred bingo halls link together across the United Kingdom to offer big prize games for their players. There are also link-ups for a smaller number of bingo halls for games played on a regional basis. Due to the new regulations and the ability to rollover the stake, the bingo operators can now offer games with prizes of one million pounds.

British bingo players, like other gamblers, tend to be smokers, and in some cases heavy smokers. To them, smoking and bingo go together. The problem for them and many bingo operators is the new smoking ban that became effective in late summer. Players can no longer smoke while they play bingo. They can only smoke outside in designated areas during breaks. This means that they are not inside playing the gaming machines. Rather than play bingo under these conditions, many players are giving up playing at the brick and mortar establishments. Many are switching to online bingo playing which they find to be a substitute for the brick and mortar experience.

Online bingo is also extremely popular with the British and in many ways is becoming more popular, along with mobile bingo. The new regulations that became effective at the beginning of September are geared at providing a safer environment for the British player. Gambling companies, including online bingos, are now allowed to advertise in the various media, but they must be on a White List in order to do so.

This White List is a list of jurisdictions, like Alderney, that conform to the British requirements and standards. This form of regulation is geared at promoting responsible gaming and protecting underage children and other vulnerable people from gambling. A safer environment makes the game more enjoyable for its players.
